Dr. Harry Mavridis receives prestigious Fellow of Society Award
In January 2024, the U.S. Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE) honored Dr. Harry Mavridis, LyondellBasell director of product development and circular design, with the Fellow of Society Award. Dr. Mavridis is one of only six individuals to receive the recognition this year and joins a select group of 365 members who have been awarded this prestigious title since it was introduced in 1984. These members were honored for their contributions in the field of plastics engineering, science or technology, or in the management of such activities.
Growing up in rural Greece, Dr. Mavridis displayed a talent for math and science, which developed into a fascination with the molecular and rheological world of polymers. In college, he completed a research thesis on Low Density Polyethylene. As an undergraduate in chemical engineering, he published his first research article at 23 years old, which earned him a scholarship for graduate school. Dr. Mavridis graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada.
Dr. Mavridis acknowledged his colleagues and their role in his achievements during his acceptance speech.
“I want to extend my gratitude to each of you for your support and collaboration,” Mavridis said. “This achievement would not have been possible without our collective efforts at LyondellBasell.”
Dr. Mavridis has devoted over three decades to pioneering research and development (R&D) at LYB, consistently striving to deliver impactful innovations that drive business success. He is the author or co-author of more than 25 technical papers (with 2,000 Google Scholar citations) and the inventor or co-inventor of 27 granted patents with more than 12 pending. At LYB, Dr. Mavridis has contributed to the development of several polyethylene products that continue to add value to the company.
“I am delighted to see this well-deserved recognition,” said Jim Seward, EVP and chief innovation officer. “As a leader and a colleague, Harry lives our LYB values every day; he champions people, strives for excellence, and really shapes the future. Thank you, Harry, we are lucky to have you.”
Over the past three years, Dr. Mavridis has been responsible for building and leading a team of researchers at Cincinnati Technology Center (CTC) within the company’s Global Product Development & Circular Design group. This initiative aims to support both the O&P and C&LCs business organizations, aligning with the LYB company strategy.
